RARE SIGNED Lou Mastro MCM artist Large Enamel, Copper, Watercolor Effect Brooch

Lou Mastro was a mid-century modern (MCM) artist active in the 1950s and 1960s, known for his work in enameled copper  and altered metals. Born in New York City in 1923,  he studied at various institutions including the Grand Central School of Art, the Leonardo Da Vinci Art School, and the Art Students League. Many of his works incorporate vibrant, psychedelic, or abstract patterns. Mastro also produced larger items such as decorative bowls, plates, and wall art.

The back shows a typical pin mechanism and a handwritten signature style "Lou Mastro" that matches Mastro's known style of signing his copper works. The textured, shimmering surface is a result of copper enameling, a process where powdered glass is fused to the metal at high temperatures. The copper base is coated with a clear or lightly tinted enamel "counter-enamel" on the back to prevent the piece from warping during the high-heat firing process. The "bubbled" or shimmering look is achieved through high-heat kiln firing. The back of the brooch shows a standard pin-and-clasp mechanism common to mid-century jewelry.
