These Traditional Thai leather shadow puppets are known as a Nang Talung or Nang Yai, featuring intricate carvings that represent a character from the Ramakien epic, likely the monkey god Hanuman.  Nang Yai, or "Big Theatre” is an ancient Thai shadow puppet art form dating back to at least the 15th-century Ayutthaya period. These puppets are used in theatrical performances where they are held up against a white screen lit from behind to cast shadows.  They are considered important cultural artifacts and decorative art pieces representing Thai heritage.

Nang Yai is recognized as one of Thailand's oldest theatrical forms, appearing in literature around 1458 (early Ayutthaya period).  Historically, it was a court entertainment, popular for its grandiose display, and considered a precursor to or sibling of the Southern Nang Talung.
