Yo-yo quilts, popular in the US during the 1920s–1940s, are textile art made from gathered fabric circles (rosettes) sewn together. Emerging as a thrifty Depression-era craft to use fabric scraps, they are often known as "Suffolk puffs" in the UK. These lightweight covers, rather than thick quilts, are highly portable and often stitched in conversational settings. While popular in the early 20th century, the technique—originally known as Suffolk puffs—dates back to the early 1600s in England, The name "yo-yo" emerged in the 1920s/30s, likely echoing the popular toy craze. Yo-yo quilts became widespread during the Great Depression (1930s) as a way for women to make beautiful, durable household items from scraps of old clothing.
